Talk:Opensim 2.0

From Open Metaverse Wiki

Name

"Opensim 2.0 is the name we are giving to our first test platform." I think we should change that name. I do agree that the Open Metaverse must be based on opensim but as an independent fork, not as a replacement for the official one. In the end there may well be no shared code at all. Besides, opensimulator.org's dev team will continue to develop their take on the software and it will be very confusing if two different teams use the same name.

I suggest we simply call it Open Metaverse because that is exactly what it is. Meta did not come up with the metaverse name and I can't imagine they have any proprietary rights to it.

Asset system

"Using blockchain as the decentralized, distributed asset system"

A blockchain is not an asset system. A blockchain is potentially part of digital rights management for the asset system. The asset system is a file hosting system, and it has high storage and bandwidth requirements.

Where to store assets is a big problem in Open Simulator worlds. Loading down the region servers with that task slows them down, and is part of why Open Simulator feels so sluggish. Second Life uses Amazon Web Services front-ended by Akamai caches. This is expensive but has good bandwidth. More than most existing viewers can use effectively. --Animats (talk) 21:11, 23 April 2023 (PDT)
