There are countless free online tools for merging images but Make Photo Gallery is different from the rest since it's powered by a JavaScript embedded into the web page so all the processing work is done by your web browser, not by a server. This means you don't have to upload your images anywhere and there is no limit to how many pictures you can process for free.

How not to do textures for Opensim.

Tools

Image editors

  • GIMP - alternative GIMP - GIMP is the GNU Image Manipulation Program for Linux, OS X and Windows.
  • PaintNET Plugins - Paint.NET is free image and photo editing software for Windows.

Make Photo Gallery

There are countless free online tools for merging images but Make Photo Gallery is different from the rest since it's powered by a JavaScript embedded into the web page so all the processing work is done by your web browser, not by a server. This means you don't have to upload your images anywhere and there is no limit to how many pictures you can process for free.

Background removers

Online tools to create alpha cutouts from an image. All of them offer free services but some charge you if you want to download a high resolution copy of the picture. 0.25 megapixels seems to be the most common limit for free downloads. For a square image this means 500x500 pixels so slightly less than a standard 512x512.

It's may be worth trying several since it's not unusual that one of them creates a good result from a picture another one is struggling with.

  • Free Image Background Remover (confirmed 2023-06-03). Adobe's online background remover. Technically you need a (free) Adobe account to download the result but if you don't want to do that, the preview image is full size so you can simply save it directly instead.
  • erase.bg (confirmed 2023-06-03). Image size limited to 5000x5000 pixels, more than enough for any OpenSimulator texture. Max. 10 conversions per day.
  • fotor.com (confirmed 2023-06-03). Free downloads limited to 0.25 megapixels. Max. 10 conversions per day
  • PhotoRoom (confirmed 2023-06-03). Also has a few other tools that may be worth looking at.
  • photoscissors.com (confirmed 2023-06-03). Free downloads limited to c. 0.5 megapixels.
  • removal.ai (confirmed 2023-06-03). Free downloads limited to c. 0.35 megapixels, enough for a 512x512.
  • retoucher.online. Offers batch processing. Free download limit is unknown but more than enough for a 512x512.
  • remove.bg (confirmed 2023-06-03). Free downloads limited to 0.25 megapixels.
  • Slazzer (confirmed 2023-06-03). Free downloads limited to 0.25 megapixels. Seems to be the same as remove.bg.

Content Libraries

CGTextures

Some Great free textures.

Outworldz

Collection of textures, meshes, objects, avatars and other items.

tonytextures

Mainly a commercial texture store geared towards architects but also with some great free content.

Torley Textures

A collection of more than 600 FilterForge generated abstract textures by Torley Linden. Originally intended as a prize for his obstacle course in Second Life, these textures have been widely spread both in SL and on various opensim grids. Please note that all these textures have already been uploaded several times to the hypergrid and it is recommended to use existing uploads whenever possible - there's no need to load the grid servers with more duplicates than necessary.

Zadaroo

Zadaroo is perhaps best known for hosting all of Linda Kellie's works after Kellie took down her own website but there is also some good classic content by the siteowner there. Please note that everything from Zadaroo has already been uploaded several times to the hypergrid and it is recommended to use existing uploads whenever possible - there's no need to load the grid servers with more duplicates than necessary.

More Free Texture Libraries

There are so many of them it will take a while to write more detailed descriptions of them all.

These are links from several old lists. Some of them were last checked as early as 2014. A lot may have changed since then and we can not take responsibility for their current validity. The list includes a large variety of sites; some are pure PD texture collection, some are photo collections with a few textrues buried in them, some are commercial sites that have (or used to have) a few free samples, some are sites on other topics with a few downloadable textures included and some links are probably here by mistake.

In any case: remember to check the TOS of a site before you use any content from it!
